Espace Media is the media and newspaper printing corporation for the Espace Mittelland. Among others the media products such as the newspapers Berner Zeitung and Der Bund belong to Espace Media. Through its diverse range of products, Espace Media informs people in the cantons of Berne and Solothurn, as well as in the German-speaking parts of the canton Freiburg, on significant events in the world of politics, economy, society, culture and sport.
The origins of Espace Media date back to the 19th century - to 1834 and the publishing of the newspaper Intelligenzblatt in Berne, which soon developed into an important voice for the people of Berne. The newspaper, later renamed Berner Tagblatt, represents one in the main line of four newspapers, of which the Berner Zeitung emerged during the course of the twentieth century. In the family tree the three following newspapers can be identified: The Emmenthaler Nachrichten (1883), the Wochenblatt des Emmenthals (1844) and the Neue Berner Zeitung (1919). The Berner Zeitung, first published in 1973, evolved as a result of the merge between the Emmenthaler Blatt and the Neuen Berner Zeitung. This paper then united with the Tages-Nachrichten – the former Emmenthaler Nachrichten – to become the Berner Nachrichten in 1977. And, finally, from the merger between the Berner Nachrichten and Berner Tagblatt in 1979, the Berner Zeitung BZ emerged, as we know it today. 1993 the Aktiengesellschaft für das Berner Tagblatt was renamed Berner Tagblatt-Medien AG BTM, which became the Espace Media Groupe in 2001.
